When her husband is sentenced to eight years in prison, Ruby, a nurse, drops out of medical school in order to better focus on his well-being and to help him get early parole. This leads to tensions in Ruby’s relationship with her mother, Ruth, and sister, Rosie, a single mom. When she meets the handsome, sensitive Brian, Ruby is confronted with new challenges and desires, and finds herself reconsidering the path she has chosen.

Ava DuVernay
Born in 1972, Ava DuVernay is an American filmmaker. She made her first narrative feature, I Will Follow, in 2011. Middle of Nowhere (2012), her second feature, won the award for best director at the Sundance Film Festival. She recently directed Venus Vs (2013), a made-for-television documentary about tennis star Venus Williams. DuVernay is the founder of AFFRM, The African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement, a distribution company.
